Understanding "Unlimited Range": Is the N39plus Nationwide or Truly Global?

Many users ask whether the N39plus is limited to nationwide coverage or if it is truly a "global" radio, and how the "unlimited range" actually works.

The short answer: Yes, the N39plus offers truly global, unlimited range, provided the device has an active internet connection (cellular data).

However, who you actually talk to depends entirely on the VHAM Talk Group you join. The VHAM platform operates on an open-group architecture, similar to traditional shortwave or Amateur (Ham) radio:

  • How it works: When you input a public 6-digit group ID, your transmission is broadcasted to anyone currently online in that exact group, anywhere in the world. Just like shortwave radio, you cast your signal out, and anyone tuned to that channel can hear and respond to you.

  • Who are you talking to? The scope of your communication depends on the nature of the group. You might be in a private family group (local/nationwide), a regional group (e.g., a specific state), an interest-based group, or a massive global group with users speaking multiple languages. The hardware range is unlimited; your audience is defined by your group ID.

International Travel: Using Your N39plus Outside the United States

If you are traveling abroad, you might notice that your radio displays a "Searching" or "Offline" status when you land in another country.

While the VHAM platform itself is global, the VHAM Data SIM included in your box is configured by default for your home region's cellular networks (e.g., North America).

To use your N39plus internationally and talk to your groups back home (or globally), you have two easy options:

Option 1: Activate a Temporary Roaming Package Before your trip, contact our customer support team to add a temporary international roaming package to your existing VHAM SIM. While this service is not free, our roaming rates are significantly cheaper than standard carrier roaming plans.

Option 2: Use a Local Prepaid SIM Card The N39plus is an unlocked device. When you arrive at your destination, you can simply purchase a local prepaid data SIM card and insert it into your radio. You can also use a spare data SIM from your personal cell phone plan. As long as the SIM card provides an active internet connection, your N39plus will immediately connect to the global VHAM servers, allowing you to communicate across the world seamlessly.
